September 2024 Media
Movies:
Shaun of the Dead (2004):
a very fun and classic zombie movie except this one is british. bri’ish. wa’er bo’le.
Leprechaun in the Hood (2000):this was my first foray into the leprechaun franchise. and wow i hate that freaky lil guy. definitely a bad but fun watch. plus i love this frame of ice t lookin thru a hole the leprechaun put thru some dude’s bod.
Hard Candy (2005):this had been on my list for a while, as a fan of 00's movies and elliot page (omg i just saw that he’s a pisces that makes so much sense like i should have known just based on the high levels of innate swag) i had put off watching this because for some reason i thought it might have similarly hard to watch scenes as something like mysterious skin. which is an incredible + important movie that i watched once and haven’t been able to watch again because it’s so disturbing in a really un-fun way. but yeah, hard candy is free on youtube right now, and while i was drawing the other day i decided to just watch it. i could always turn it off if it was too much. it wasn’t what i expected. it’s unsettling tho, and i would still recommend looking at the content warnings. many things are mentioned or alluded to, but i'd say the movie isn’t very overtly graphic. overall i felt it was solid but not something i'd want to watch again, at least for a while.
Dinner in America (2020):
i finally watched this movie after seein people rave about it on tiktok for months. it’s really sweet. that watermelon song is catchy as hell. beware an extremely minor character drops a hard R n-bomb like 10 min in... that was startling..... anywho kyle gallner my emo boy crush like 15 years ago (in jennifer’s body) and emily skeggs are cute or whateva
Sorry, Thanks (2009):
after watching dinner in america i saw a tiktok that was recommending movies of a similar vibe. in this list was sorry, thanks and i saw that one of the leads was a black woman so i decided to watch of course. this type of media is severely lacking in bipoc and i will watch everything i can. i signed up for IFC’s free trial to watch this if u too are interested. this movie is mumblecore. i hadn’t heard that genre name before, but here’s the first paragraph of the mumblecore wiki page so you don’t have to look it up:
Mumblecore is a subgenre of independent film[1][2] characterized by naturalistic acting and (sometimes improvised) dialogue, low budgets, an emphasis on dialogue over plot, and a focus on the personal relationships of young adults. Filmmakers associated with the genre include Andrew Bujalski, Lynn Shelton, the Duplass brothers Mark and Jay, Greta Gerwig, Aaron Katz, Joe Swanberg,[1][3][4] and Ry Russo-Young. In many cases, though, these directors reject the term.[5] The genre is a mostly American phenomenon.[6] The related term mumblegore has been used for films mixing the mumblecore and horror genres.[7]
wow there’s a name for everything even if u don’t know it. but yeah sorry, thanks was like a lil peek into the lives of a small friend group of young adults. we see some relationship dynamics and mundane life things. i feel like it’s pretty linklater adjacent but like less profound or something? mumblecore seems to be lil less like “whoa even the small moments of life are special” and more like “uh yeah this is life i guess.” am i right? am i wrong? where my mumblecore nerds @? please tell me if i sound like an idiot.
Boyhood (2014):
so yeah speaking of richard linklater, i watched boyhood thru my ifc free trial as well. I saw it in theaters when it initially came out in 2014. it was the summer between graduating high school and heading to college for me.. kinda, dare i say, serendipitous? so anyway richard linklater, what a heartfelt guy, huh? if you don’t know, this movie was filmed over the span of 12 years, like they would film one week each year for 12 years to show the characters' real-life growth. the story is told through lil vignettes of life moments and follows one family through some of their ups, downs, and perhaps most importantly, their in-betweens. it feels really earnest and sentimental. also, watching it now, ten years later, this movie is such a time capsule. they started filming in 2002 and wrapped in 2013.
some of my fave time-capsule moments: at the beginning of the movie samantha, the daughter/sister character (and also linklater irl daughter) is singing a song from high school musical. there’s a scene where mason, the main character/son/brother is playing wii sports boxing. there’s a scene where [i could be wrong but i think] theyre watching the music video for telephone on one of the early iphones. later in the movie, when mason is college-age, he’s on a facetime call with his dad, and it’s soo glitchy because when they filmed it, i have to believe, they were on a real facetime call and that’s just how it was. also later in the movie mason is talking to his girlfriend about his feelings toward facebook, which was the main social media platform at the time. he talks about how he wants to delete his facebook account because he values connecting in real life and doesn’t want to be living through a screen. he mentions how fucked up it is that we’re addicted to the dopamine rush getting a notification gives us. and she essentially responds like wow ur just so different, mason ur just not like other girls. later, there’s a scene where mason talks about how his college has an automated system for finding roommate matches based on submitted survey questions. he’s impressed by it’s ability to match him with someone who actually seems cool and is also into bright eyes. how sweet.
Max and Mary (2009):
hurray for stop-motion animation. this one is from quite a few years ago but i had never seen it. i vaguely remember hearing bout it in passing at some point (maybe someone mentioned it in a youtube video i watched or something?) this was also available thru my ifc free trial and not only is this stop motion, but the leads are toni collette and phillip seymour-hoffman... say less, im sat. it was a sweet movie, a penpal story between a lonely dweeby 8-year-old australian girl and an old new york jew (i, myself, come from a long line of old new york jews, aw) with autism. the movie follows each of their lives, their letters, and their relationship over 20 years. it’s written and directed by adam elliot, who also wrote and directed memoir of a snail which comes out mid-october i believe.
TV:i somehow haven’t watched any new tv? started a couple shows including fear of the walking dead but i don’t really wanna talk about it yet. there are some shows that i’m looking forward to watching tho: the penguin, uzumaki, season 3 of from, survivor to name a few.
Videogames:
Celeste (2018):
im very late yes, yes, i know. like i said in my last media post, i got my pc last year and ive been slowly but surely making my way thru all the epic indie games i missed out on, ok. anyway this is a 2-D platformer about a girl determined to summit mount celeste while battling her inner demons and collecting strawberries. i love the 8-bit art style and the parkour-y mechanics are super fun once you get the hang of it. honestly its mad fun i understand the hype. u speedrunners are insane tho.
Terraria (2011):
also recently finally started terraria. it’s sick i love to dig and explore. really chill lil vibes. the combat aspect of it is honestly kinda annoying to me... this might sound crazy but i don’t really like boss battles. or at least i generally enjoy every other part of a game more than the boss battles. idk what it is, i just dont care. i haven’t gotten very far yet at all, i beat the eye of cthulhu, but the looming task of building some kinda fortress to do my boss battles on is... unappealing. otherwise, the game is so cool but like bruh im just tryna dig.
Animal Well (2024):Started Animal Well at the end of the month... it’s been on my steam wishlist since it came out but idk i just been playin other things blah blah blah but then it was on sale the other day so i copped. lots to say bout it but ima wait till next month tbh. but like as of rn... it’s sooo awesome and im obsessed fr.
